The Home Field Advantage

There is a sports phenomenon that surfaces each and every year in each and every sport regardless of country or league. That is, the “home field advantage.” This phrase is a term used to describe the fact that teams playing in their home city or arena have consistently won a higher percentage of games than when they are visiting another team’s arena or are “one the road.”

“A 2006 study by The Times found that in the English Premiership, a home team can be expected to score 37.29% more goals than the away team, though this changes depending on the quality of the teams involved.” - Wikipedia

What can the home court advantage tell us about our life? What do the intangible benefits really mean in day-to-day life? Sage proverbs advise us that “home is where the heart is” and that “a man’s home is his castle.” Is there any prudent knowledge that we can gleam from these sayings?

Maybe the answer is found in another sports idiom, the notion of “protecting our house.” The idea that we are performing in front of our civic brothers, supporters, and family members and want to give a little more effort than we thought we could. And then there is the constant real-time feedback and encouragement that we receive from the fans that propels us forward. Indeed there is no sweeter sound to an athlete’s ear than thousands of fans who “root, root, root, for the home team.”

Who is on your home team, family, friends and maybe co-workers? Though it might not seem like it at times, there are people who really do want us to do well and will cheer for us when we strive for our best. So lace up, stretch, and take the field, your fans are behind you.
