Why People Want to Get Married?

It is more about how two people feel about each other and their future together.

The sense of fulfilment that comes from marriage cannot be challenged. Marriage tends to change people’s goals about life making these goals more gratifying because there is someone to share these goals with and the accomplishments that result thereof. In addition, marriage tends to make people undergo major behavioural transformations because marriage entails not taking care of yourself but also of your spouse.

The sense of belonging and responsibility tends to have a very positive effect on married people. It would be very easy to just earn for yourself and consequently, just spend on yourself. The benefit and satisfaction in doing this may sound appealing initially. However, the rewards are very short-lived.

Recent studies have proved that married men tend to earn 10-40% times more than single or cohabitating men. In addition, wages of married men tend to rise faster after marriage. This finding can be attributed to the fact that married men tend to act more responsibly in their careers. This responsibility may arise due to the responsibility of providing for their spouse or enjoying a better lifestyle with their spouse.

In addition, since marriage is also about companionship, the joy of celebrating the successful career incidents can be extremely satisfying. Married couples are more likely to save for their future. On the other hand, single or cohabitating men are less likely to experience emotional fulfilment and are likely to spend more money by indulging in binges to fill the void in their lives.

The emotional support and intimacy enjoyed by most married couples is also one of the reasons why people choose to get married. In fact, there are apparent health benefits of this emotional intimacy. Marriage has a very positive effect on people’s health. Married couples tend to enjoy various health benefits that single people or cohabitating couples don’t.

Recent studies have proved that unmarried people have higher mortality rates than married people. The mortality rate for unmarried women is 50% higher than married women whereas, the mortality rate for unmarried men is 250% higher than married men.

Some people argue that the same amount of emotional support and intimacy can be enjoyed even while cohabitating. However, this is far from truth. Research indicates that cohabitation is a completely different institution than marriage. Cohabitating partners have different set of expectations from each other and are less dependant on each other. The very fact that most people choose to cohabitate is because they do not want a long-term commitment. Therefore, this living arrangement does not reap the emotional benefits that can be derived out of a marriage.

There are some practical financial benefits of getting married as well. Married people are more likely to buy their financial assets such as a house earlier than unmarried people. This provides long-term financial security as well as emotional stability. As discussed earlier, married couples are more likely to save. This pool of savings can provide them with a much better lifestyle and a better security for their future. In addition, married couples are likely to enjoy more tax benefits than unmarried couples.

There are times when people want to get married due to societal or parental pressure. Getting married by a certain age is still a norm in some cultures. Not conforming to this norm can be frowned upon by the society. The stigma associated with being single can be greater for women than it is for men. The societal pressure of being a mother by a certain age also drives women to marry early.

The societal pressure can be a contributing factor for parental pressure. However, parental pressure alone can also make people enter into a marriage. When people enter into marriage because of any kind of pressure, it is bound to create problems in future because marriage is likely to be a hasty decision in such cases.

In some cultures, marriage is considered to be a religious institution that is a mean to serve religious ends. According to some religions, human beings have been created in halves. Therefore, it becomes the duty of every human being to complete himself or herself with his or her “better half”. It is believed that a man and woman are supposed to create positive energies and without marriage, a person can never feel complete.
Therefore, some people tend to marry purely for religious reasons.
