The Beginning: A Happy Married Life
I first met her at my client’s place. What started off as a casual chat blossomed into love over a period of time. Before we realised, we were already married and had a kid as well. Things were moving smoothly for the first two years. We had a little home with a garden around it. We used to go on long vacations whenever time permitted. However, things did not last long.
The Middle: The Breakup
Slowly, differences started creeping into our lives. There was constant pressure from her asking me to earn more money. From the current job, I had earnings which could keep us self-sufficient. However, she demanded for a more luxurious life. To meet her demands, I had to clock in additional hours at work and, sometimes, on weekends as well. I kept running, but was not able to catch up with her demands.
She slowly started complaining about me having ruined her life. Every night, after I was back from work, she used to start off with a fight. As a result, I found it even more difficult to concentrate on my work. Eventually, it started affecting my professional life. The day arrived when hell broke loose.
I decided that I could not continue to live with her any further. I decided to file for Divorce. I approached my friend with this issue. He asked me to go in for a mutual consent on grounds of irreconcilable differences. Else, I would end up paying a fortune for my attorney and other legal proceedings.
I searched the Internet to get hold of a divorce attorney. After making a list, I went in person to meet each one of them to select one. I managed to find one whom I found was quite affordable.
My wife was served with the divorce papers. She was quite shocked in the beginning. I told her that I wanted to lead a more peaceful life and that I couldn’t carry on these squabbles day in and day out. She became furious and hysteric. She started shouting at me as if she were to bring the sky down. We used to have fights and arguments in the dismal hours of the night after our child went to sleep. I was very much concerned that he was not affected by this.
Soon, the news about my filing for divorce spread around. People started questioning me. I found it very difficult to answer them. But I decided to stick on to my decision. Concentrating on my work became all that difficult. There were only bitter feelings left in me. There was no place for love in me. Things around me looked bleak. I was shabbily dressed for work. I went about working at odd hours. Work that usually took me an hour or so extended for days together.
On the other hand, I was more concerned about my child. He was too young for all this. I was very much concerned how he would be able to handle all this. He would now be punished for no fault of his. I was worried about his upbringing. Whenever I tried talking to him at home, my wife would whisk him away. My dreams about him lay shattered in a corner.
The End: The Verdict
The day of the hearing came. My wife and I were granted divorce on mutual grounds owing to irreconcilable differences. I relinquished my current house to her as she was awarded the custody of our only child. Apart from that, I was expected to pay her £ 2,700 to support her and my child financially every month.
In my opinion, life after divorce has been more peaceful. Though I get to live a simple life, I feel that I am leading a more happy life. Except that I paid a heavy price for that.
