Coping with Stress Before and After Divorce

When trouble begins between a married couple, life can become extremely stressful. Things come to a boil and divorce seems to be the only option. However, the stress does not disappear as soon as a decision to part is taken. People find it extremely painful to cope with the time before and after divorce.

Accepting the Decision

Even when divorce is relatively amicable, one of the partners will always find it difficult to accept that the marriage has ended. One assumes that a life together was no longer possible, which was why a decision to get divorced was made. Once the decision has been made, the first step for both partners to deal with the consequences is to accept that their life together is over. Acceptance will help a person put things in perspective and deal with all that will follow.

Letting Bitterness Go

If two people who have had a life together can part as friends, it can help to cope with the sense of loss. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, there has been too much bad blood for a friendship to exist. In such a case, a person should at least let the bitterness go. It is very important to be rid of negative emotions, if one wants to move on after a divorce. It is not easy but since one cannot turn back the clock, one has to make an effort.

Coping with Stress

Since it is accepted that getting divorced is not the easiest of times, a person should look for ways to deal with stress. Not everyone copes with stress the same way and not everyone is helped by the same stress busters. However, there is some sort of coping mechanism available for everyone.

Sometimes, a person needs to get away from the same familiar environment. While coping with the stress of divorce, travelling to new places can be therapeutic. A new place offers no sense of déjà vu or unnecessary reminders. Meeting new people and experiencing new adventures can be the best way to rediscover the person one was. Also, since strangers take one at face value, awkward questions and explanations can be avoided.

Many people get so caught up with the responsibilities of being married that they forget to make time for themselves. Oftentimes, they become unfit and do not take care of their appearance. When going through a divorce one can lose confidence and self-esteem. Getting back in shape and looking great can help gain one’s lost confidence. Joining a gym or taking yoga classes can act as terrific stress busters apart from improving self-esteem.

A career can be a lifeline during a divorce. Taking up work responsibilities can take one’s mind away from negative thoughts. Doing a great job at work can earn one recognition and give a person back a sense of confidence. A busy schedule does not allow one the time to wallow in pity or dwell on the past.

Sometimes, distracting tactics are just not good enough to help a person through the ordeal of a divorce. The pain is too deep and a person may be too emotional. At times like this, it might be a good idea to take professional help. Opening up to a relative stranger and getting an objective insight might help a person gain perspective. Emotions can be so mixed up that a person really has no clue about how to move on. Professional help can give clarity to a situation and it might be easier to leave it behind.

Conclusion?

The bottom line that one must understand is that divorce is not a happy occurrence. Even when a bad marriage comes to an end, a person feels disillusioned and disappointed. A divorce is the end of a life that one had expected so much from, expected to last forever and that one had got used to. To start afresh requires a lot of strength, effort and positivity. To muster up all of that, just post a traumatic time, can be very difficult indeed.

One needs to believe in second chances and, more importantly, one needs to believe in oneself. While a divorce might be the end of a chapter, it is also the beginning of a new one. It is better to move on from a bad marriage than remain stuck in a miserable situation.
