Chesterfield set the standard early on after beating Bournemouth. Three goals in the second half for the 12/5 Spireites saw them top the table after one game. Derek Niven after 47 minutes, Colin Larkin on 62 and Paul Shaw on 90 were the goal scorers.

Port Vale condemned newly promoted Leyton Orient to an opening day defeat as they won 3-0 at Vale Park. Leon Constantine scored twice on 43 and 72 and debutante Akpo Sodje made it 3-0 for the even money Valiants 12 minutes before full time.

Cheltenham Town made a mockery of the 9/2 odds available for them before kick off by beating Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. Goals from Kayode Odejayi three minutes after the break and Grant McCann on 54 put the outsiders in front. Leon Knight pulled one back for the Swans on 77 but the promoted side held firm.

Huddersfield Town, one of the pre season favourites, were beaten 2-1 by Gillingham. Matt Jarvis opened the scoring for the 13/10 Gills after 57 minutes and new signing Dean McDonald struck a second 10 minutes later. Gary Taylor-Fletcher gave the Terriers hope nine minutes from the end.

Brentford beat Blackpool to ensure Leroy Rosenior had a winning start during his tenure at Griffin Park. Oli Skulason netted the only goal of the game for the 11/10 Bees 16 minutes from the end.

Rotherham United, with a 10 point deduction, endured the worst possible start as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Brighton & Hove Albion. Former non league striker Alex Revell netted the 6/4 winner for Brighton two minutes before the break.

Enoch Showunmi was an inspired substitution as he netted the winner for Bristol City against Scunthorpe United. Former Luton Town striker Showunmi secured a 6/10 victory after 69 minutes.

Carlisle United beat Doncaster Rovers at Brunton Park in front of a 35-year high crowd of over 12,000 spectators. Paul Murray's early strike after four minutes proved decisive as the Cumbrian's earned a 6/4 win.

Bookmaker's pre season fancies Nottingham Forest beat Bradford City by a single goal at the City Ground. Julian Bennett's goal after 10 minutes was enough to win the match at odds of 7/10.

Ronnie Moore enjoyed a winning start to his tenure as Tranmere Rovers boss by defeating previous club Oldham Athletic at 11/10 odds. Hot shot striker Chris Greenacre opened his account for the season after 24 minutes.

Last season, two divisions kept them apart, but relegated Crewe Alexandra were held to a 2-2 draw by promoted side Northampton Town. New signing Ryan Lowe gave the Alex the lead after seven minutes but Scott McGleish drew the Cobblers level five minutes later. Crewe took the lead again through David Vaughan after 19 minutes but Andy Kirk ensured a share of the points at 12/5 odds three minutes before the interval.

Millwall left it late to earn a point against Yeovil Town in Nigel Spackman's first game as manager. Summer signing Wayne Gray put the Glovers in front after 35 minutes but Lions striker Darren Byfield earned a draw at 5/2 with eight minutes left on the clock.
