Creativity and Persistence: A Primer - Part 3

I'm going to wrap up quickly here.

You need to know what you don't want, and what you do want, and you need to make sure every step you take, as far as possible, is a step forward.

I want to make just two more points.

**Forward vs. Backward**

Sometimes you make steps backward. It happens. Sometimes you take several steps backward and it takes a while to get back to where you were. Sometimes you make mistakes, and sometimes life just intervenes, with an illness, a job cut, a client who doesn't like your work and won't pay for it, a divorce, a natural disaster.

We don't always get to move forward. Sometimes we get pushed backward.

The key to moving forward anyway is to recognize that there will be times, beyond your control, when you'll get knocked completely off course.

If you can find a way to make those backwards moves into sideways moves, if you can find a way to learn from them and grow from them and benefit from them, you can continue moving forward even faster than before.

And if you can't, you can just hunker down and wait. Sometimes that's all we can do, is wait and hope things will get better.

I've done a very unscientific study, and I have it on good authority that over time, things generally do trend toward better. Sometimes over a lot of time. And not for everyone. But in general, things get better.

Which brings me to my last point about creativity and persistence.

**Believe**

I've known a lot of people who believed they could never do what they wanted, that they had no choice but to stay where they were, and that nothing good would ever happen to them.

Know what?

They were right.

People who insist on focusing on the negative, believing they can't do anything and that only bad things will ever happen to them, will only ever notice the bad things, will not get anywhere near their goals, and will stay miserable. And I really feel sorry for them.

During summer school between my junior and senior years of college, I had a roommate, a 40-something, single, elementary school librarian with a very negative attitude. She kept saying things like,

"You'll never be able to make it as a writer. No one does."

"You're so naive."

"I remember when I was your age and believed I could change the world."

I don't remember her name, I think it was Mary Ellen, or Mary Ann, or something like that. Mary Ellen or Mary Ann or whatever, if you're out there, listen up.

I AM DOING WHAT I WANTED TO BE DOING. I live where I want to live. I have the family I wanted. And I am changing the world.

And so can you. It's not naive to believe you can do what you believe in and want to do. In fact, I think it's a little arrogant of everyone else to believe you can't, don't you?
