In a sense, achieving one's full potential in life can be compared to achieving VICTORY on a battlefield.
Life is a battlefield for many of us and some of us struggle more than others to keep up with the troops. But just think about this for a moment; to be able to achieve your full potential by using your God given talents; to earn your living in a way which suits you best and is absolutely in tune with your personality and ability; to look and feel great for your age at any time, can only promote happiness, personal satisfaction, physical and emotional wellbeing, wouldn't you agree? And just imagine the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction in the knowledge of a life well lived, when our time comes to finally leave this world.
Sadly very few will ever have that satisfaction.
Instead, most of us find ourselves stuck or bogged down in the mud of life. The reason I use that phrase is because as a young man I managed to pass the arduous Royal Marines SBS (Special Boat Service) training in which I was first introduced to the SBS mud crawl. I remember the first experience very well and only those who have actually experienced the SBS mud crawl will know what it feels like to be stuck in the mud, the feeling of absolute exhaustion, hopelessness and frustration of knowing you are going nowhere can hardly be described; with no energy left to go forward or backwards, only absolute willpower will push you to move your body onward.
Life for many of us is like that as well. We often find ourselves stuck in the unhappy circumstances of life, either through having made wrong choices or because of forces beyond our control. Most of us settle into a comfort zone, resign ourselves to our lot and put up with it, yet whinge about our circumstances and all the bad things that happen to us. Others are too scared to do something about their situation and choose the easiest way out, they stay put and condemn themselves to an unfulfilling, empty life.
Self sabotaging thoughts are the main culprit that will rob you of your Victory in life. Our sub-conscious mind; the mental diet which we feed ourselves with every day, plays an absolutely essential part and is the deciding factor in whether we will ever achieve our true potential in life or not.
Like passing an SBS/Navy SEAL training course; it all starts and happens in the mind first.
Another major barrier which prevents us from ever achieving our full potential in life is low self esteem. Many of us feel that we are simply not good enough to realise our goals and aspirations and this feeling of inadequacy is continually perpetuated in the back rooms of our sub-conscious mind. Subsequently, we don't love ourselves enough to make the changes needed in our life; yet, when you really think about it, you are a unique individual in every way. There is nobody else like you in the universe. You are special and you'd better believe it. Because if you don't, nobody else will.
What then is the use of even pursuing a change of mental and physical perspectives in your life to achieve your Victory, your full potential if you don't consider yourself and your life to be special? Whatis the use of getting out of bed each day?
I guess that is one of the major reasons why most of us choose to rather just go with the flow of life and become a member of the Pack then pursue change. It is much easier to huddle with the pack than to challenge the dominant, mainstream paradigms that have become your prison.
In the Marines and in civilian life, I found that in general, the members of The Pack always have a dependency attitude. They are always waiting to be saved. They are always dependant on or blaming somebody else and therefore continually whinge (The victim approach) and they huddle together believing that safety lies in numbers, not realising that they become even more vulnerable.
They usually live in a state of denial and are crippled with psycho sclerosis, a hardening of the attitudes, which produces intellectually handicapped individuals who are unable to ask the simple questions in life: What is the next best thing I could be doing to get myself out of this situation? Or: Is there a better way around this?
They are the ones who usually end up on the losing end of life or losing their life on the field of battle.
You were born with the great potential to become successful and happy in life and to excel in the field of work you feel most comfortable and are most interested in, and which conforms to your inner, natural tendencies (talents), spirit and agency.
By using your Free Agency, the ability to choose between right and wrong, good or bad and by being persistent and open minded it's only a matter of time before you find it.
Have you got what it takes to achieve your true potential in life? For many of us that remains an unanswered question for a life time.
