5 Important Questions for Creative People - Part 3

I often ask myself this question:

If I Had a Choice, How Would I Do This?

This question is valuable not only in creative endeavors, but in dealing with children, bosses, and other situations that arise every day.

The key to this question, of course, is that you DO have a choice. Your choices may be limited, but in our society, in 2006, we almost always have choices if we only stop to realize it.

So in looking at, how would I deal with this if I had a choice, we are using our creative skills and our problem-solving skills.

More, we are opening ourselves up to possibility and allowing ourselves to exercise our natural freedom to choose.

This is a very important question, and one every creative person should be asking himself or herself several times a day.

I mentioned in part two of this article that what I really wanted to be doing, rather than writing this article, was taking a nap. I had to ask myself, "If I had a choice, what would I do?" Of course I did have a choice - I could have taken the nap before the article was finished. The consequences of that choice would have been having to rush later to finish the article and not truly being able to enjoy my nap.

I chose to finish the article first, but realizing I do have a choice will make the nap more enjoyable, restful and refreshing.

**What Is the Most Important Thing I Can Do Now?**

We get so caught up, sometimes, in our to-do lists and our calendars and our ideas of what's important, that we forget that priorities change.

What is the most important thing I can do now? Is it the next thing on my list, or the last? Is it make that phone call, or watch a movie with my daughter?
I am a huge fan of Steven Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. One of the things I like about the book is that it focuses on effectiveness and not efficiency.

And that's what this final question for creative people does. It asks you to get your priorities in order, not for the month, the week, or even the day, but for right now.

If you're working on a project, and the next thing you're supposed to do is B, but X really seems like the next logical step, it's time to stop and think, what's the most important thing I can do? How can I be most effective?

I hope, if you've read all three sections of this article, that you've seen some common threads running through the five questions, and that you realize what holds them together.

It goes back to Covey and his Seven Habits.

These questions don't necessarily make you more creative. They make you more effective.

If you ask these five questions of yourself, on a regular basis, you become a stronger, more useful person. You get more of the right things done and come closer to becoming the person you want to be.

Thank you for listening.
