This can be one of the trickiest parts of the whole optimization game. What you basically desire through this matter is to share the lime light with other sites that are of like minded content. So you are looking to make sure that other sites like yours will be pointing to you and the same is true of your site. Now this is not an easy task. There are so many sites on nearly every subject in the world and you need to be making decisions about which ones are right for you. There is a lot of common sense that goes into such things and there are also some basic link building rules that you should follow. All in all there is nothing that cannot be figured out with a bit of clear thought and compromise in many areas.
First off you need to determine which sites you will be willing to trade links with. The rule is to make sure that you are getting a good deal on the link exchange. Look for sites that are like yours but maybe not in direct competition. So if you own a site that is about poker you want sites that are similar in nature but not actually the same thing. If you have a site that is basically a mirror image of the other the link exchange will do you no good. So if you have a poker site you may want to look for sites that are about gambling in general. This will give you a good basis to run on. You are getting a link to your site on another that is in the same arena but not a direct competitor of the site.
Also you should be looking for already established sites. Google and other search engines provide ranking information on other web sites. These ranks are a good way to understand how much traffic and how well designed the web site is. With this information you will then understand whether or not the site will be a place where you would like to see your link placed. In the Google arena you will want a rank of five or more. This will give you a lot of traffic because the site is well established and ready to start pointing traffic in your direction.
