More and more American homes are getting for themselves an air purifier. As pollution levels inside homes increase, people are left with little option. As the sales increase, manufacturers of air purifiers are also getting more sophisticated and they are launching new and improved models of purifiers.

The first innovations were with the technology. Initially we just had ionizers. But with the passage of time we have moved on to HEPA purifiers, UV purifiers and recently the ozone purifiers have also been introduced, which although, has come under severe criticism from some sections.

As the technology is being innovated upon and more money going into the research and development of these new filters, manufacturers are also shifting their attention to other aspects of air purifier which are equally dependent on new, improved technology.

Since air purifiers are being used domestically they now need to be as user friendly as possible. However, that wasn't really the case when they were initially launched. All they were able to do was to clean the air, and there their functionality stopped. But things are becoming better, as each manufacturer tries to innovate and make their products better.

Recently, air purifiers are coming with indicator lights that will notify the user that it is time to change the filter inside. Previously one always had to keep an eye for that, and the replacement was based much on guess work. The average domestic owner doesn't have the expertise to understand if it is time to replace the filter. With indicator lights, that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

A similar innovation has been the introduction of the in-built infrared detector that can actually measure the amount of particulates which are suspended in air. Not all purifiers come with this facility but some do, and with the passage of time, most of them will have this enhancement. Generally when you turn on an air purifier it runs at high speed. But after a few cycles of cleaning the air, it need not be at high speed and you can actually lower it to the medium level. Previously, the user had to do that. Now with these detectors which can measure the particulates, the switch over happens automatically. So when the detector tells that the particulate level has decreased the purifier automatically switches to medium speed and when the particulate levels are at its minimum then the purifier shifts one level down to low speed.

This technology is still at its infant stage and it needs further sophistication.
