A great many people may be more susceptible to back pain because of psychological rather than physical factors. Factors such as stress, living alone, and satisfaction with your work and/or life can have an impact on the health of your back. Depending on the types and conditions of your back pain, below are ways to treat your back pain problems.

1. A short period of rest is usually recommended after the onset of severe back pain. Lying down for more than two days can weaken your muscles and bones, making your recovery longer. If you opt for bed rest, be sure to get up and walk around every few hours, even if your back hurts.

2. During the first 48 hours after your back pain begins, apply a cold pack or ice pack to the area for 5 to 10 minutes at a time every few hours to numb the area and reduce inflammation. After 48 hours, use a healing pad or take a hot shower or bath up to three times daily to increase blood flow to the area.

3. Non-prescription painkillers, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen, may give some relief.

4. Until your back feels better, avoid heaving lifting and sitting for extended periods of time. Gentle exercises, such as Tai-chi stimulate the production and release of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers, and improves the flow of blood and oxygen throughout your body.

If self-treatment doesn’t work, you may need to seek professional help. The first step is to see your family’s doctor who can properly assess the nature of your injury. He or she may recommend non-prescription painkillers or drugs to reduce inflammation and pain, such as cortisone. These drugs are usually used only for a short period of time due to potential side effects that include weight gain, nervousness, insomnia, increased body hair, muscle wasting, lowered resistance to infection, and mood swings.

Once diagnosed, you may want to seek treatment in the form of chiropractic therapy, physical therapy, and spinal manipulation which is the use of hands to apply pressure to your spine in different directions and locations in order to adjust your spine. Other types of treatments include massage therapy, which can stretch and loosen muscles, and acupuncture, which uses needles placed at strategic points to relieve pain. In addition, back braces, traction, and ultrasound are sometimes used, though their benefits are not proven.

In some cases, you may require surgery. There are two general types of back surgery. Decompression (done to relieve pressure on a nerve or other spinal structure) and fusion (done to fuse a spinal structure together to prevent painful or damaging movement). People with nerve problems, fractures, or dislocations are the most common candidates for surgery.

Depends on the conditions of your back, in most cases, a back surgery is unnecessary. Seek a second opinion, and get all the information on the risks and benefits of a recommended procedure before consenting to it.
