Neuromuscular Massage: Why Should I Seriously Think About Trying It?

If you have been in a automobile accident recently or have been living with pain for decades now, maybe you need to learn a little about this kind of massage treatment.

Neromuscular massage or NMT as some refer to it, is specifically used to address the pain you are currently dealing with. You must first understand that your nervous system controls everything in your body, including muscle tension and the amount of pain you can take...
Whereas a standard "relaxation" massage will work on the general areas of your back...NMT is a deep tissue massage that addresses individual specific muscles, ligaments, connective tissue & tendons that are often overlooked in a typical relaxation type of massage.

Here is what you can expect.

First the client will sit in a special chair built for getting a massage. Your massage therapist will then use their thumbs , fingers and elbows to search every fiber tissue looking for bands of muscle fibers that are tighter than the the remainder of them. These result in troubles such as hyper tonicity and ischemia. Hypertonicity is simply another word for an excess tension in your bodies muscles. Isechemia is mainly another word for a restraint of your bodies blood flow in that area.

These areas will be massaged until they "release" or relax. NMT will increase the flow of your blood, moderate their pain and in fact release anxiety on nerves caused by past soft tissue and muscle injuries.
People often wonder why a neuromuscular massage therapist will be working on one area when it seems to hurt them in another place. The explanation is Neuromuscular massage helps the relaxing of trigger points and intense knots of tense muscle that in turn relax pain in other areas of the body that are linked by the same muscle. This is known as "Referred Pain". Lets take an example Relieving a stressed trigger point in your back...could help release pain in your shoulder or even get rid of pounding headaches.

What Does This Reveal About Your Massage Therapist?

Let this sink in for a second. This means that your neuromuscular therapist must be schooled in Several disciplines including:
The physiology of the bodies nervous system
Its relation on the muscular and skeletal systems.
Is schooledin the field of kinesiology
Is schooled in biomechanics
Is skilled in how to work in a clinical or medical environment

How Can NMT Possibly Benefit You?

Neuromuscular Therapy will be used to work on each of the five elements that cause pain in everyone of us:
Ischemia: We talked a little about this one previously. Isechemia is simply a need of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity when touched.

Trigger Points: These are highly irritated points in muscles, which refer pain to other parts of the body. Remember we discussed about how releasing a trigger point in your left upper back could relax or prevent those dreadful throbbing headaches. (Even though you might not have related the two together before)

Nerve Compression: This is basically stress on a nerve caused by any of the following:

Soft tissue
Cartilage
Bone

Postural Distortion: This is an imbalance of the muscular system as a result of the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes. This is a different way of saying your body every now and then needs a muscle alignment similarly as a automobile requires one after hitting too many potholes!

Biomechanical Dysfunction: This has to do with to the imbalance of the muscular skeletal system due to bad habits like these:
Bad lifting habits
Terrible golf swing
Dreadful tennis stroke
Inaccurate typing posture
If you feel that you may benefit from Neuro-muscular Massage therapy, Pick up the phone and contact a local massage therapist and ask if they specialize in this type of massage therapy. After a session or two I think you will be thrilled with the way you feel.
