Elementary School Age Children - Age 8-10
How does a parent decide which types of activities are suitable for your child's interests and development? Each child develops and matures at a different rate. Knowing the developmental stages of your child's age group however, can aid you in finding a volunteer opportunity that meets his emotional, intellectual, physical and experiential needs.
Elementary school age children, ages 8-10 years have developed a mastery of their physical body. Girls area bit more physically developed than are boys. Students are easily able to perform small, manipulative tasks and have mastered concrete understandings of cause and effect. These children are beginning to apply logical thought to the practical situations that they are familiar with. They are taking pride in a developing sense of independence and self-sufficiency. Their peers increasingly influence elementary age children. Although adults still exert a strong influence on their behavior, elementary age children are beginning to test the attitudes, values and belief systems of those around them.
Since elementary age children are now able to understand cause and effect relationships. Letter writing campaigns to veterans, soldiers stationed overseas or letter to the editor are a good way to practice writing skills as well as knowing that the letter that the child writes will have an effect on the recipient, even though he may be a long distance away. Students can read stories or tutor young children in reading or math. This activity models self-control, good behavior and cooperation as well as the academic skills of reading or math.
This is a great age to begin group projects in your scout, youth, church or school group. Students enjoy working with other young people as long as they are in small groups. This activity encourages the child to learn cooperation and problem solving skills. It is important for adults to be an integral part of the group process. Elementary age students are still looking to adults are role models and a stable support for their emotional growth. Packing hygiene kits for local shelters, disaster or emergency kits for organizations like the American Red Cross, are fun activities that can be done in a group setting.
Children are eager to be helpful and take pride in being able to make a contribution to helping our communities. Encouraging children to become active citizens, even at a young age, will help to grow the caring and concerned leaders of tomorrow.
