January is National Soup Month
Help Fight Hunger in Our Communities

More than 33 million Americans, that's one in ten families, are not able to afford enough food to meet their family's needs. Although most poor families in America do work, many do not make enough money at their jobs to pay for rent, medical care, daycare, transportation and food. Having a job is not always enough to protect the family against hunger and poverty. Food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens and other emergency food providers, now serve at least 23 million people a year.

Statistics About Hunger in America

According to the U.S. Census Bureau:

- In 2002, 34.6 million Americans lived in poverty.

That is 12.1% of all the people living in the United States.
This number is 2.3 million more people than the year before, 2001.

- 22% of African-American families did not have enough to eat in 2002.

21.7% of Hispanic families did not have enough to eat in 2002.

- 3.8 million Americans were hungry enough last year that a family member
had to skip a meal because they could not afford the food they needed.

- 32 million Americans, or 11.8% of the population of the United States,
live at or below the poverty line.

The line is an annual income of ,630 for a family of three.

January is National Soup Month.

Help fight hunger in our communities by getting involved
in some community service projects.

Here are some ideas of projects that you and your family can do:

- Collect cans of soup to donate to a local food pantry or shelter.

- Make sure to collect the labels from Campbell soups to redeem for money
for your school.

- Host a Stone Soup party. Everyone brings something to add to the pot of soup.
This is a great activity to do when you do not have a lot of money to spend
on a project or community get-together.

- Cook several pots of homemade soup. Sell quarts of soup as a fundraiser, or
donate to a local shelter.

- Create gift baskets for the needy with all the ingredients they would need to
make their own pot of homemade soup.

- Host a Soup Cook-Off Competition. Invite several local celebrities or popular
restaurants to participate. Community members will pay an entrance fee to get
tickets to taste and vote for their favorite soups. The winner gets
the "bragging rights" as the Best Soup Chef in the community. The money
raised is donated to charity.
