What are some volunteer activities that my family might do to support literacy?


? Create a Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration
? Do activities for Literacy Week, Book Week, Library Week
? Book Buddies
? Assist prisoners to read books on tape to send home to their children.
? Read books on tape for the visually impaired.
? Read the newspaper, a favorite novel, or the Bible to a nursing home resident.
? Assist a nursing home resident to write a letter or Holiday cards.
? Collect books to donate to disadvantaged children and adults.
? Collect books and magazines to donate to locate hospitals, nursing homes, doctors offices, and other residential facilities.
? Make bookmarks to donate to the library or local Literacy Center.
? Volunteer at your local library.
? Create a large print book with the special phone numbers for older or visually impaired person.*
? Take an ESL family with your to the movies, bowling, the zoo, or on a picnic. Make a vocabulary list of words to learn to read and use in that setting.*
