Key Features

If you intend to work, or simply to amuse yourself, with DVD films, or computer games, whilst travelling, the size, and other characteristics, of a laptop screen will be important to you. Laptop LCD ("Liquid Crystal Display") screens are available in a range of sizes, usually between 12 and 17 inches, measured diagonally. Do bear in mind, however, that some of the larger screen sizes result in a quite large, and heavy, laptop. This may not seem terribly important at the outset, but you may quickly resent having to lug around a heavy machine, day after day. Many laptop users find that a screen size of 14, or 15 inches, is a satisfactory compromise, and provides, for example, comfortable viewing of Windows at the preferred resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. The Acer EX4220 Laptop, for example, features a 14.1 inch, "CrystalBrite" screen, with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

The total amount of main memory, or random access memory (RAM), installed in a laptop can have a bearing on how quickly that laptop responds when running applications software. It is wise, therefore, to check the minimum, and recommended, memory requirements for the operating system – that is, Windows, Mac, Linux, or whatever else – that you intend to use, along with those for your applications software. Requirements are unlikely to be a problem for most modern laptops; Windows XP, for example requires 256MB of RAM. To preserve the longevity of your laptop as a useful tool, however, look for a model that is easy to upgrade, memory wise.

About Acer

The Taiwan based manufacturer, Acer, is amongst the top four distributors of laptop technology in the world, and supports a network of distributors in over 100 countries in Europe, Asia and the United States. The company is renowned for its commitment to innovative, yet reliable, solutions, at affordable prices. Recent innovations include "Empowering Technology", and "CrystalBrite" LCD technology, which were developed by Acer, itself, and incorporated into its range of laptop computers.

Conclusion

A laptop computer is a nice thing to have, yes, but your decision to choose one over a traditional, desktop computer should not be based solely on "bragging rights", or showing off in front of your peers. Try to make a realistic assessment of the benefits that a laptop can bring to your working, or personal, life, before you commit to buying. If you travel for work, frequently, and/or for long distances, you may well find that a laptop can significantly increase your productivity. If this is the case, you may also like to consider purchasing an additional rechargeable battery pack, so that you don't run out of computing resources at a crucial moment.
